For three weeks from 18 May 2013 young people from the Hexham Youth Initiative were transported into the world of shopkeepers and boutique owners with the help of an amazing amount of local support and encouragement.  Our Pop Up Prom Shop was a fusion of ideas brought to life with help from Patricia Graham from Hexham Spaces, the Community Partnership and the landlord, Skipton Building Society.
Based in the former Thorntons premises in Fore Street, the idea was to provide a wide range of reasonably priced second hand ball gowns for the up and coming Prom season. We also wanted to help the town out by filling an empty premises. The best and most unexpected outcome was the great amount of fun that was enjoyed by everyone who got involved.
Local businesses like Dickinsons and Core Furniture helped us to transform the empty shop whilst the Hexham Courant funded an interior designer for a day to ensure that the shop did not resemble a jumble sale. Members of the community were unbelievably kind and we received a large number of beautiful dresses to tempt the public.
We raised £850 for our summer activities, the young people who volunteered their time and energy learnt a great deal in the process and I think we helped to cheer up the town.  All in all a great success.
Many thanks to all involved and good luck to all the others involved in Hexham Spaces, the empty shops initiative.
